Rosslyn Chapel and Peebles

For a great many years Rosslyn Chapel was visited mainly for its architecture, history and religion but after being used as a setting in the book, the Da Vinci Code, and as a location in the subsequent movie Rosslyn Chapel has achieved worldwide fame and now attracts massive attention and visitor numbers who come to find the Holy Grail as part of their Da Vinci Code tour.

Even on a busy day, Rosslyn Chapel, with its exquisite carvings which are relevant to biblical, masonic, pagan and Knights Templar themes, is one of the most atmospheric and mysterious places in Scotland.

During the wars of independence, nearby Rosslyn Castle and the surrounding area played an important role in the history of Scotland. A battle was fought here in 1303, when small force of Scottish Knights defeated a larger English army three times in 24 hours.

Peebles, the former county town, began as a small cluster of houses which sprang up around Neidpath Castle. Granted royal burgh status in 1367 by David II, it suffered during the Civil War when Oliver Cromwell and his troops swept through Scotland's border towns. Today, surrounded by attractive open countryside, the town is a favourite holiday location with a wide main street, pleasant shops, restaurants and attractive buildings of historical interest.

Depart Ayr 09:00, Prestwick 09:10, Troon 09:20, Irvine 09:35 and Kilmarnock 09:55 and travel direct to Peebles to arrive, depending on traffic conditions, at approximately noon. Depart Peebles 13:30 and continue to Rosslyn Chapel for 14:00. Depart at 16:00 returning to Kilmarnock approximately 18:00 and Ayr 19:00
