Scottish Borders, Galashiels and Moffat

Castles, abbeys and stately homes all have their tale to tell of a colourful and turbulent history that has, over the centuries, shaped daily life in this area of outstanding natural beauty, the Scottish Borders, and of the part they played in Scottish history. In 1599, Galashiels was granted the status of Burgh of Barony. This meant the town had the right to hold its own market. The market cross of 1599 was restored in 1887 and a section of original shaft can be seen in Old Gala House. Near to the cross once stood the tolbooth which was used as a prison and as a place where money was collected from merchants who came to trade at the markets. The attractive market town of Moffat, with its wide High Street and long, eventful history, was once something of a fashionable spa town and a centre for the local woollen industry.
