Portpatrick & Logan Botanic Gardens

Logan Botanic Garden, warmed by the Gulf Stream and set amidst some of the most majestic scenery on the south-western tip of Scotland, is an exotic paradise famed for its tender collections of southern hemisphere plants. The Walled Garden is a showcase for brilliant blooms and is ablaze with colour throughout the season. The fishpond, adorned with water lilies, creates a focal point and embellishes the air of tranquillity within the Garden. The Woodland Garden, with its ideal growing conditions, has an amazing collection of weird and wonderful plants and trees such as eucalypts and the gunnera bog. Scotland's most exotic garden never fails to impress whatever the time of year. Portpatrick, cradled at the foot of rocky cliffs and looking across 22 miles of the Irish Sea, has had over the centuries a chequered history. The village, now a holiday resort, has been, at various times a military base, a coastguard station and a lifeboat headquarters. The heart of the village, however, is its harbour which has been used by fishing boats, freight ships, mail packet boats and the Irish ferries is now the home of the Portpatrick life-boat. Depart from Kilmarnock 09:15, Irvine 09:30, Troon 09:45, Prestwick 09:55 and Ayr 10:05 and travel via Maybole, Girvan and Stranraer to Portpatrick for approximately 12 noon. Depart Portpatrick 13:30 and travel direct to Logan Botanic Gardens for 14:00. Depart Logan Gardens 16:00 and return via Girvan, Turnberry and coast road to Ayr 17:30, Kilmarnock 18:30
